In the meeting, the JAMB Registrar gave statistics of 2018 Admission and what he revealed was shocking.
2018 Admission Statistics.
He revealed that tertiary institutions had the capacity (Quota) to admit 963,727 students but only 583,250 candidates were admitted leaving 380,477 vacancy. Now the big question is “why the vacancies (wide gap) & yet some candidates are still not admitted?”
Breaking further, it was revealed that:
- Universities were suppose to admit 575,687 candidates but they admitted only 442,353 candidates. By implication 133,334 candidates were not admitted.
- Colleges of Educations were suppose to admit 261,790 candidates but they admitted only 60,987 candidates. By implication they didn’t admit at least 200,803 candidates. One of the reasons behind this is that most candidates don’t want to go to COE.
- Polytechnics were suppose to admit exactly 121,968 candidates but they only admitted 79,351 candidates. 42,617 were not admitted. The reason is also same with that of COE’s.
- A total of 963,727 candidates were suppose to gain admission in 2018 but only 583,250 candidates did gain admission. Leaving 380,477 candidates.
Breaking the above figure further:
- Federal Universities were suppose to admit 267,189 candidates but they admitted only 235,474 candidates. State Universities were to admit 218,974 candidates but only 181,182 candidates were admitted. While Private Universities who were suppose to admit 575,687 candidates admitted only 575,687 candidates.
- Federal COE 88,850 candidates but they admitted only 32,801 candidates. State COE were suppose to admit 147,620 candidates but they admitted only 26,586. While Private COE were suppose to admit 25,320 candidates but they admitted 1,600 candidates.
Note: COE in this context means Colleges of Education. - Federal Polytechnics/Monotechnics were suppose to admit 50,705 candidates but they admitted just 38,917 candidates. State Polytechnics on the other hand were suppose to admit 59,376 candidates but only 37,081 candidates were admitted. While Private Polytechnics/Monotechnics admitted 3,353 candidates against the 11,887 candidates they were suppose to admit.

Reasons Candidates Were Not Admitted.
One of the main reasons why some candidates were not admitted was because most of them chose few programmes. This is what JAMB referred “over subscription of few Programmes”
JAMB Policy Meeting
Other Causatives of Non-Admission Includes:
- Wrong O’ Level subject combination
- Low (Post UTME) screening score
- UTME-combination deficiency
- Ask Allschool for the correct UTME Subject Combination
- Non-acceptance of Offer.
- Duplication of application
- Absent from POST UTME Screening
- Late change of Institution & Mismatch of Catchment.
2018 UTME: Padding of Admission.
In this section, we will show you what some candidates/parents claimed as regard to the 2018 admission and what JAMB said they found out.
University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).
Candidates/Parents Claim
- Transferred candidates to other programmes because they did not meet up with programmes’ aggregates
- Skipped candidates because they did not upload O’ level results
What JAMB Found Out (Fact)
- CAPS revealed that the UNILORIN did not use the total ranking to arrive at aggregate.
- UNILORIN weeded candidates to other programmes based on PUTME screening score only before adding the O’ level grading.
- The institution lowered the Merit cut-off which allow ‘candidates’ with lower aggregates to come up (e.g. MBBS 56.8)
Uniabuja and Unijos.
Candidates/Parents Claim:
- The institutions skipped (jumped) some qualified candidates by saying the candidates did not upload their O’ levels at the time of selection.
What JAMB Actually found Out.
- CAPS revealed that there was consideration of other candidates after the affected candidates uploaded their O’ levels results.
- The institutions later admitted them.
University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN)
Parents and JAMB cried to JAMB to save their soul as regards to UNN Admission Process.
What JAMB Actually Found Out:
- The institution weeded some high-scoring candidates to other courses to allow preferred candidates come up.
- 85382042 (Ugwuanyi Jane) applied for MBBS with score of 320 but was moved to Physiology.
- UNN was made to correct the anomaly.
Some Fake News and What JAMB Found Out.
In this section, we will share with you some fake claims some candidates and parents raised that the truth JAMB found out.
Federal University Dutse (FUD).
What a Parent claimed:
- Jideobi Joseph, father to Jideobi Anthony with registration number 85088349FG raised alarm that his son applied to Federal University, Dutseto study medicine.
- That he scored 295 in UTME & 256 in post utme screening.
- That the University refused to admit him when others with lower scores were admitted from the same State (Anambra).<6li>
- The boy was admitted into MBBS & had accepted at the time the father was writing to the Board but had not informed anyone.
- The admission was approved & accepted on 16th October, 2018.
- The father wrote to the Board on 17th October, 2018.
University of Lagos (UNILAG)
What a Parent Claimed:
- A Royal Father wrote on behalf of Abraham Udomsinachi with Registration number 85421358DC.
- That he scored 316 in UTME, 25/30 in UNILAG POST UTME screening & aggregate of 83.3.
- That UNILAG refused to admit him and that will not augur well for their educational developments .
JAMB Found Out that the boy was admitted on MERIT into Mechanical Engineering but yet to accept at the time the Royal Father wrote to the Board.
Consequently, JAMB advised parents to JAMB candidates to be conscious of making allegations that can not be substantiated. They are also adviced to thoroughly investigate allegations to avoid misleading the Public
UTME / DE Registration Statistics (2015-2019).

Why Release of UTME Results were Delayedand what JAMB Actually Found Out.
- Caused by insatiable greed & desperate antics of parents who are hell-bent on inducting their innocent & not-soinnocent children into the world of sharp practices & corruption
- Given circumstances made it difficult for the Board in 2017 to adopt the international best practice of pre-release clinical scrutiny of results the examination of this nature.
- JAMB released the 2017 & 2018 UTME results almost within 24hours of each session to convince the doubting Thomases that the expeditious release of CBT results was not beyond our capacity.
- At release of 2018 results, JAMB publicly announced that the results of the 2019 UTME would not be released until we subject the procedure to some scrutiny
- To ascertaining the degree of success of the structures, infrastructure, policies & processes put in place to checkmate the not very few among us who believe in pervasively illegitimate means of achieving set ambitious & goals.
What JAMB found out is unbelievable !!!
FORGERS AND FRAUDSTERS:
- Cluster of fraudsters who had been benefitting from examination malpractice went to the extent of forging the Registrar’s signature, writing fictitious petitions, threatening the government that heavens would fall except certain rules are relaxed.
- They were also engaging in other unbecoming conduct to pressurise the Board to capitulate to their desires.
- They were mistaken. JAMB is grateful to Government especially Federal Ministry of Education (FME)
What JAMB has Decided to do
- Partnering security operatives & relevant agencies on cyber crimes
- Engaging the machineries & sponsoring them in order to tap from their knowledge
- Movement of some services to the registration portal in order to prevent extortion of candidates
