Post-UTME veritable quality control —Afe Babalola

Image
FOUNDER of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Ado Ekiti, Chief Afe Babalola, says that the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) remains a veritable quality control tool in admission of students to various tertiary institutions in Nigeria. He also believes the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has restored the credibility of the test administration by the board. Chief Babalola spoke in an interview he granted JAMB Weekly Bulletin, obtained from the board’s headquarters in Abuja.   He said: “The post-UTME has proved to be a veritable quality control measure which I believe has worked and is working well. For example, the first Post-UTME we conducted at the University of Lagos, where I was then the pro-chancellor and chairman of council, yielded positive dividends. “There was this student, with a very impressive JAMB result, who applied to study Law. Since English Literature was and is still central to the a...

COVID-19: Health Experts Kick against Reopening of Schools Now

Image
Health experts have kicked against federal government’s plan to reopen schools, saying the decision was ill-timed and capable of slowing down the fight against COVID-19 in Nigeria. Speaking to THISDAY Thursday, the President, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, said the COVID-19 infection rate was still climbing, and that it would be difficult for children to strictly adhere to physical distancing and other protocols put in place for the prevention of the virus. He said: “We know government cannot shut down schools for too long, so it is understandable it is mulling the idea of resuming through a plan to stagger the time between morning and afternoon classes, but the question we must ask the Ministry of Education is when it is planning to implement this. Opening schools now will be a mistake and will be dangerous for our fight against COVID-19 because infection rates are still climbing. We should open in a manner that is safe. In other climes where infection ra...

Why school will not resume on June 8 – FG

The Federal Government says it can not open schools until it is sure “our children can go to school and return safely without taking COVID-19 home”. The Minister of State Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said this on Wednesday in Abuja at the 36th joint national briefing of the taskforce. The minister, who denied the reports that the PTF said schools would reopen in the country on June 8, said the government could not afford to take any costly risk, especially as it regards the safety of pupils and students in the country.   He said: “Until we are sure these children can go to school, return safely and not bring up with them COVID-19 and infect people who are more susceptible than they are, then we are running a huge risk and God forbid, in our hurry, something happens to our children, I am not sure how anybody will be able to retrieve what has been lost.” He appealed to private owners of schools to co-operate with the government in ensuring a safe reopening.   “We are goi...

Schools Reopening: FG to roll out policy.

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic has assured Nigerians that plans for safe reopening of schools across the country were being put together.  Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the PTF, Mr Boss Mustapha, gave the assurance on Wednesday during the daily media briefing by the task force in Abuja.  The PTF, however lamented that the need to shut schools, as part of the measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country, had compounded the challenge of out of school children.  The SGF also used the time to charge state and local government authorities, as well as proprietors of schools, to start putting measures in place that could be help in early and safe reopening of schools.  “Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the nation was faced with the challenge of out of school children. This has now been compounded by the compelling need for closure of schools as part of the measures to limit the...
